Gardoki, M. (2018): Tracking a Resident Male Sperm Whale off São Miguel Island

Marina Gardoki’s study was based on photo-identification of a male sperm whale, known as Mister Liable, and his residency and movement patterns in the Azores archipelago and specifically off São Miguel from 2011 to 2017.

Objectives

This research aims to learns about Mister Liable’s residency, movements, and his associations with other whales. Spatial and temporal patterns of a resident male sperm whale off São Miguel Island, Azores, are studied. Female sperm whales tend to associate in stable groups, but males are normally found separate, and migrate between high and low latitudes.

Impact

The most frequently resighted whale off São Miguel was Mister Liable that showed a specific residency pattern in central west shallower waters.
The presence of this individual implies that site selection may be used strategically to find feeding and mating opportunities.
In addition, this study emphasizes the need for a long-term monitoring of sperm whales behavior and conservation in the Azores.

UN SDG 14 (Life Below Water) is supported by Marina Gardoki’s study as these movements and residency patterns of sperm whale (Physeter macrocephalus) are fundamental to understanding movement patterns within the Azores. The research relies on photo identification data to support marine biodiversity conservation, promote sustainable whale watching practices, and implement ecosystem management through monitoring and identification of key habitats and behavior patterns of a resident and productive male sperm whale.
