Martins, R. et al (2018): Discovering a Resident Family of Risso’s Dolphins off São Miguel

Martins et al. (2018) developed a photo-ID app to identify Risso’s dolphins (Grampus griseus) around São Miguel, Azores, and discovered a resident family consisting of 12 individuals.

Objective

The main objective of this study is to identify Risso’s dolphins (Grampus griseus) temporal distribution, habitat preferences and the characterization of any resident populations in the area, using a new photo-ID app

Impact

Of the 12 resident Risso’s dolphins, 12 were identified and the rest in low re-sighting rates (transients).
The research shows that the photo ID app is good at labelling individual dolphins and tracing their movements over time, which can be used to help with conservation and management of Risso’s dolphins in the Azores.

Supported UN Global Goals

Martins et al. (2018) make a contribution to Sustainable Development Goal 14 (Life Below Water) by using a new photo-ID app to study the habitat and residency patterns of Risso’s dolphins (Grampus griseus) of the Azores. The research helps identify resident families for conservation of cetaceans and marine biodiversity and helps inform sustainable management practices for cetaceans.
