Ojeda, V. et al (2018): Complex Temporal Distribution of Fin Whales and Sei Whales

From 2009 to 2017 Ojeda et al. (2018) analysed the temporal distribution of fin whales (Balaenoptera physalus) and sei whales (Balaenoptera borealis) off São Miguel, Azores and found seasonal patterns and variation in their migration strategies.

Objective

Temporal distribution of fin whales (Balaenoptera physalus) and sei whales (Balaenoptera borealis) off São Miguel, Açores was examined during an 8 year period (2009-2017). Was hoped to reveal seasonal patterns and determine if variation in migration is constrained by environmental factors or species biology.

Impact

Fin whales were mostly seen in spring, with some outside the usual range of migration, which suggests breeding in the area around São Miguel, the study found.
There was a primary arrival of sei whales in late spring to mid summer, and they have shifted their arrival time over time.
Increasing number of sightings apart from the main migration season with these species and increasing efforts in whale watching with these species may imply that there are different whales on migration patterns that may be related to reproductive patterns and to availability of prey.

Studying the temporal distribution of Fin and Sei Whales in the Azores contributes to Sustainable Development Goal 14 (Life Below Water) according to Ojeda et al. (2018). The study finds promise for changes in whale migration patterns that might be adjusted by environmental influences, including sea conditions and food availability. Research supports conservation efforts and provides information for sustainable whale watching in the region by using long term data from whale watching tours.
