Ojeda, V. et al. (2019): Baleen Whale Faeces in the Azores: Insights from Whale-Watching Platforms

In Ojeda et al. (2019) blue, fin and sei whale faecal samples from São Miguel (Azores) were analyzed in faecal samples taken from whales for around studying feeding patterns in relation to diet related behaviour in the baleen whales.

Objectives

To review baleen whale faeces records collected during whale-watching tours around São Miguel, Azores, between 2012 and 2019.
To analyze the colouration patterns of faeces from blue whales, fin whales, and sei whales and assess the relationship between diet and feeding behaviors.

Impact

A total of 53 faecal records were collected, with fin whales contributing the largest number of sightings (76%), followed by blue whales (15%) and sei whales (9%).
The colour of the faeces varied, with blue whales showing reddish tones, fin whales displaying a range from reddish to brown, and sei whales showing yellow ochre.
The study suggests that the Azores serves as an important feeding ground for these species, especially for fin whales and blue whales in spring.
The project also recommends the continuation of faecal sample collection for further studies on whale migration and diet.

Ojeda et al. (2019) use non-invasive methods to investigate the feeding behavior and diet of baleen whales in the Azores contributing to Sustainable Development Goal 14 (Life Below Water). The study reveals the capacity of whale faecal samples as a way to check whale health, identify prey species and assess how environmental factors affect whale population, assisting in marine biodiversity conservation and the preservation of sustainable whale-watching practices.
