Also, this investigation aimed to: 1) Evaluate the temporal and spatial distribution of Short-beaked Common Dolphins in São Miguel from 2008 to 2020. 2) Identify Highly Identifiable Individuals (HII) among Short-beaked Common Dolphins and update the photo-identification catalog. 3) Analyze residency patterns based on opportunistic sightings. 4) Estimate the minimum duration of individual stays in the area for re-sighted dolphins. 5) Recognize associations between individuals through long-term observations. The study utilizes data and photographs collected by Futurismo Azores Adventures, spanning from May 2008 to March 2020, to provide valuable insights into the population dynamics and behavior of this species in the Azores region.
1) Temporal and Spatial Insights: The study reveals the seasonal and geographical distribution of Short-beaked Common Dolphins in São Miguel Island, shedding light on their migratory behavior. 2) Highly Identifiable Individuals (HII): Identification of HII individuals contributes to the development of a comprehensive photo-identification catalog, aiding future research and conservation efforts. 3) Residency Patterns: The analysis of residency patterns distinguishes between transient, resident, and seasonal resident individuals, elucidating their long-term presence and preferences in the region. 4) Association Dynamics: The recognition of associations between individuals underscores stable social bonds among Short-beaked Common Dolphins over extended periods. These conclusions serve as a foundation for continued research and conservation initiatives focused on this species in the Azores and other regions, enriching our understanding of their behavior and habitat requirements.
Milla’s master’s thesis, born from her invaluable internship at Futurismo and utilizing the company’s extensive data, not only underscores the organization’s unwavering dedication to sustainable practices but also reaffirms their commitment to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal #14, “Life below Water.” By uncovering the intricate relationship between environmental factors and the distribution of bottlenose dolphins off São Miguel Island, Milla’s research not only enriches our understanding of marine ecosystems but also provides crucial insights for the effective conservation of marine life, aligning seamlessly with Futurismo’s mission to protect and preserve the vibrant underwater world, fostering a harmonious coexistence between humans and the oceans.
