Chez les c\u00e9tac\u00e9s, ces cicatrices restent blanches ou non pigment\u00e9es et peuvent r\u00e9sulter d'une grande vari\u00e9t\u00e9 de blessures, telles que des accidents, des parasites, des pr\u00e9dateurs ou des combats intrasp\u00e9cifiques (McCann, 1974). Ces cicatrices sont per\u00e7ues comme un indicateur de la \"qualit\u00e9\" du m\u00e2le (MacLeod, 1998).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Les proies du cachalot sont principalement des c\u00e9phalopodes. Ils n'ont donc pas besoin de dents, ce qui leur a permis d'\u00e9voluer en tant qu'armes de combat. Il en r\u00e9sulte une importance accrue de la qualit\u00e9 de la signalisation. Cela permet d'\u00e9viter les risques d'escalade dans les rencontres agressives entre individus in\u00e9galement assortis (MacLeod, 1998).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ces cicatrices commencent \u00e0 appara\u00eetre au moment de la maturit\u00e9. Elles indiquent l'\u00e2ge, les animaux plus \u00e2g\u00e9s et plus grands \u00e9tant plus marqu\u00e9s (Kato, 1984).
