This investigation aimed to assess the temporal and spatial distribution of bottlenose dolphins off São Miguel Island, identifying potential residency patterns and examining associations with environmental variables, contributing valuable data for effective conservation management in the region.
The study’s conclusions underscore the significance of environmental factors, such as prey availability and sea surface temperature, in influencing the temporal and spatial distribution of bottlenose dolphins off São Miguel Island. Furthermore, the identification of potential resident groups within the population highlights the need for continued research to inform robust conservation strategies and management plans for this marine ecosystem.
This investigation significantly contributes to SDG #14, Life below Water, by shedding light on the spatial and temporal distribution of bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops truncatus) off São Miguel Island in the Azores. By analyzing ten years of opportunistic sighting data and six years of photo-identification records, the study identifies key areas and seasonal variations in dolphin encounters. It also identifies potential resident dolphin populations and their associations within the region.
