Gil et al. (2015) use data from ≥70 studies and unpublished datasets to map Atlantic Ocean humpback whale (Megaptera novaeangliae) sighting fields of occurrence (FOs) using a spatio-temporal framework with the aim of describing seasonal distribution and migratory routes.

Objectives

Humpback whale (Megaptera novaeangliae) migratory routes in the Atlantic Ocean are examined, the migratory patterns are analyzed spatially and temporally. Gaining insights into their patterns of migration, it integrates published and unpublished data from different regions, including the Azores and Mauritania.

Impact

It was found that the most common time humpback whales are seen in the Atlantic is in the third quarter of the year, indicating the time these whales peak on their migration. Unexplained gaps in migration data, among others, were indicated by fewer records in the second and fourth quarters, in offshore areas where less research effort was made. However, more data was needed to suggest that there may be unreported interhemispheric migratory routes. Future work will involve teaming up with other research groups to bring together photo identification, genetic, and oceanographic data to more fully understand humpback whale migration.

Analyzing their migratory routes, this study advances the achievement of Sustainable Development Goal 14 (Life Below Water). The research synthesizes existing data along with unpublished sightings to provide a data base for informing conservation and management strategies for this migratory species. Seasonal migration patterns, combined with the need to protect the species throughout its migration range, are presented.
