Correia, A. M. et al (2016): Blue and Humpback Whales: Unravelling Migratory Routes through a Spatio-Temporal Analysis in Macaronesia

In this study the spatio-temporal analysis of sightings from whale watching surveys and bibliographical records allowed exploring migratory routes of blue whales (Balaenoptera musculus) and humpback whales (Megaptera novaeangliae) in the Macaronesia region, following Valente et al. (2016).

Objective

The aim of this study was to examine spatial and temporal trends in sightings patterns of blue and humpback whales in Macaronesia (Azores, Madeira, Canary Islands, Cape Verde) with the aim of understanding potential migratory routes. Such research is essential to help us understand how the whales migrate and use habitat.

Impact

It found migratory routes for blue whales along Northwest African coast, and possibly one to Mauritania. It turned out that humpback whales not only migrate through the Azores, but also travel and presumably suitably migrate across high seas.
The research found that both species seem to use the Azores as an important stopover site and point to a need for further studies on habitat preferences in order to improve knowledge of their migration patterns.
Continued monitoring and conservation measures to protect these species are given emphasis by the study.

Supported UN Global Goals

By mapping and characterizing the migratory routes of blue and humpback whales in Macaronesia, this study is based on Sustainable Development Goal 14 (Life Below Water). The research combines whale watching data with data on the sighting of large-scale cargo ships and insights into the whale migration patterns are gained, which is critical for the Conservation and Management of marine species and habitats. With this project, we show the need for marine protected areas and provide some ways to lessen human pressure on migratory species.
