Ernesto, M. et al (2021): Photo-ID Study of Fin Whales off São Miguel

Fin whales (Balaenoptera physalus) off São Miguel, Azores, 2010 to 2020 were photo-ID studied by Ernesto et al. (2021), identifying 261 individuals, and reporting seasonal and interannual resightings.

Objective

Build a comprehensive photo‐identification catalog of fin whales

The objevtive is to build a comprehensive photo‐identification catalog of fin whales (Balaenoptera physalus) sighted off São Miguel, Azores, in order to study their spatial/temporal distribution pattern. The aim is to determine site fidelity and help fill in the picture as to their migratory behaviour.

Impact

Site fidelity in Spring migration

The study found that fin whales visit the Azores each year, primarily during the spring migration. The presence of resightings within the same year and across different years suggests site fidelity in the region. The research calls for further comparisons with other photo-ID catalogs to deepen our understanding of fin whale migratory behavior and movements in the North Atlantic.

Supported UN Global Goals

Sustainable Development Goal 14 (Life Below Water), to which Ernesto et al. (2021) make an important contribution, is through expanding understanding of fin whale (Balaenoptera physalus) population dynamics in the Azores. They find that the species is site fidid and that the data provide an opportunity for long term monitoring and conservation efforts, and they suggest that sustainable marine tourism and biodiversity protection are important.
