Fernandez, M. (2009): Differences in spatial distribution of two small delphinids in two islands of the Azores Archipelago

Maria Fernandez’s study examined the distribution of Delphinus delphis and Stenella frontalis around Pico and São Miguel, Azores, using sighting records to assess habitat preferences and niche overlap.

Objectives

This work focused on the description of the spatial distribution of common dolphins (Delphinus delphis) and Atlantic spotted dolphins (Stenella frontalis) around two islands in the Azores archipelago (Pico and São Miguel). Furthermore, it aimed at identifying the associations of these species with environmental factors including depth and seabed slope, and to compare potential niche overlap and ecological interactions.

Impact

The differences observed in the distribution of both species between the islands are statistically significant and can probably be attributed to differences in bathymetry.
In Pico, both species are apparently found in the same places, indicating that they occupy the same ecological niche.
In São Miguel, S. frontalis is found in deeper depth than D. delphis suggesting that there is spatial partitioning.
Depth and seabed slope are the most important predictors of the occurrence of these species, although their roles differ between islands.
The present study stresses the need to take into account environmental factors for the conservation and management of these cetacean populations in the Azores.
