Fernandez and Azevedo (2011) modeled cetacean distribution around São Miguel Island, Azores, using whale-watching data and spatial techniques to inform conservation efforts.

Objectives

To use presence-only models to create a potential distribution map for cetacean populations in the waters of São Miguel Island, Azores.
To apply two different models (GARP and MaxEnt) using opportunistic data from commercial whale-watching operations, focusing on bathymetric-derived ecogeographical variables such as depth, slope, rugosity, and bathymetric position index.
To compare the performance of the models and identify the most realistic and useful model for future conservation and management efforts.

Impact

The study successfully applied presence-only models (GARP and MaxEnt) to create a distribution map of cetaceans in the Azorean waters. The bathymetric variables proved to be significant in explaining the species’ distribution, with MaxEnt showing better results in model performance based on Area Under the Curve (AUC).
The results suggest that these models can be valuable for future conservation and management initiatives in the region, helping to identify key habitats for cetaceans in São Miguel waters.

Supported UN Global Goals

Fernandez and Azevedo (2011) aid Sustainable Development Goal 14 Life Below Water by applying spatial modeling to identify the cetacean distribution in the Azores. The study capitalises on incidental data collected from whale-watching to gain better insights into the distribution of cetaceans and their habitats as a way of promoting sustainable marine conservation and management in the area. The results should be useful for future conservation plans and the preservation of the species in the Azorean waters.
