González, L. et al (2019): Temporal Distribution and Multi-scale Habitat Preference Analyses for Azorean Blue Whales

Using seasonal eddy kinetic energy, sea surface temperature, and chlorophyll levels as multi-scale environmental variables, González et al. (2019) analyzed Azorean blue whale (Balaenoptera musculus) habitat preferences.

Objective

The purpose of this study was to examine Azorean blue whales (Balaenoptera musculus) temporal distribution and multi scale habitat preferences through the relationship with sea surface temperature (SST), bathymetry, eddy kinetic energy (EKE) and chlorophyll concentration.

Impact

In dynamic oceanographic areas with intermediate levels of chlorophyll and seasonal eddy kinetic energy (e.g., EKE), blue whales preferred areas more than 10 km beyond the coast.
Sightings were found to follow a temporal distribution with a peak during spring months (April-May) and a steep decline in fall. Future research is suggested focusing on mesoscale circulation features and its influence on whale distribution, in particular, on dynamic oceanographic features in the Azores

Supported UN Global Goals

Using a combination of passive acoustic monitoring and satellite satellite-linked acoustic recorders, González et al. (2019) study the habitat preferences and temporal distribution of Azorean blue whales (Balaenoptera musculus) adding to Sustainable Development Goal 14 (Life Below Water). The study maps the habitat of whales based on a multi-scale integration of dynamic oceanographic variables. This research will contribute to marine biodiversity conservation and future sustainable management and conservation efforts regarding the Azores.
