1) Update the photo-identification catalog of bottlenose dolphins in São Miguel Island (2014-2019) with photographs from 2008, 2010, 2012, and 2020. 2) Analyze the social structure of the identified dolphins. 3) Investigate the group composition and association patterns among these dolphins. 4) Explore potential patterns of residency among the population. 5) Contribute valuable data for informed conservation and management strategies.
1) The bottlenose dolphin population off São Miguel Island is considered open, with continuous recruitment of new individuals during the study period. 2)The dynamic social structure of these dolphins is characterized by a fission-fusion pattern, with flexible social bonds and some individuals exhibiting long-term relationships. 3) Hierarchical clustering analysis identified five distinct groups within the population, suggesting varying degrees of social cohesion. 4) Resident dolphins were observed alongside migratory individuals, highlighting potential genetic exchange between oceanic and resident groups. 5) Temporal analysis revealed non-random associations among individuals, emphasizing the persistence of social bonds over time. 6) Long-term data collected through opportunistic platforms in the Azores contributes significantly to developing effective management strategies, although further research is needed to comprehensively understand the resident and transient dynamics of this population.
Andreia Pereira’s study on bottlenose dolphins off São Miguel Island significantly contributes to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal #14 It enhances our comprehension of the dolphins’ social dynamics, population structure, and potential genetic exchange, all of which are crucial for effective marine conservation and aligns with Futurismo’s mission of responsible and sustainable marine tourism. Her internship with the company facilitated data collection, highlighting the company’s pivotal role as a platform for scientific research and its dedication to preserving marine life around São Miguel Island. This study underscores the synergy between scientific inquiry and eco-conscious tourism, reinforcing the company’s commitment to marine conservation.
