Rafael aimed to identify Risso’s dolphins around São Miguel using a photo-ID software we developed. It allows for the characterization of dorsal fins using a set of marks. This classification allows for the identification of possible matches of individuals by filtering fins with identical marks.

Impact

Only c. 2% of the individuals studied are effectively resident

Risso’s dolphins are sighted year-round in the Azores. However, we discovered that only c. 2% of the individuals are effectively resident; the remaining are considered so far as transients, as shown by its very low resighting rate. The 12 identified resident individuals form a nursing pod, since they are always seen together and three calves were born in the past 4 years.
