Valente, R. et al (2019): When and Where? Unravelling Distribution Patterns of Baleen Whales through a Bibliographic Review

In a bibliographic review of baleen whale distribution from 1956 to 2016 in Macaronesia, Valente et al. (2019) identified trends in both seasonally and spatially, as well as research gaps.

Objective

The objective was to describe spatial and temporal patterns in the distribution of baleen whales in Macaronesia (Azores, Madeira, Canary Islands, Cape Verde) over the time period 1990–2016 based on both the literature and data. Our objective was to delineate research gaps and gain a systems understanding of the distribution of four baleen whale species in the region.

Impact

Although blue, fin, and humpback whales were mainly sighted in spring, minke whales had more summer.
Nevertheless, there was a great gap in research effort, particularly in offshore regions and coastal ones, such as Morocco and Western Sahara.
These results underscore an additional need for further research, particularly in regions poorly surveyed for baleen whales, to provide a firmer basis for better conservation strategies and for the protection of baleen whale populations in Macaronesia.

In Macaronesia, Valente et al. (2019) contribute to the study of Spatial and temporal distribution patterns of baleen whales (Balaenoptera acutorostrata, Balaenoptera physalus, Balaenoptera musculus and Megaptera novaeangliae) regarding Sustainable Development Goal 14 (Life Below Water). This review identifies research gaps, particularly in offshore areas, and offers key impetus for conservation and sustainable management of cetacean populations in this highly productive area.
