What is Urzelina (São Mateus)

João Paulo Santos | The beautiful village of Urzelina

Urzelina (São Mateus) is one of the most desirable residential areas in Velas, on São Jorge in the Azores. Known for its charm and peaceful atmosphere, it captivates visitors and residents alike. Whether you want to relax or seek adventure, this village offers the perfect setting to create unforgettable moments with family and friends.

Quick Info

Urzelina derives from a botanical species abundant in the region, mainly on the coast. Urzela is a dye plant that was once widely exported to England, France, Belgium, and the Netherlands.

This parish is unique on the island because the coast and green slopes surround it. In addition to its vast natural heritage, Urzelina offers a range of tourist attractions.

History & Geography

In May 1808, a volcanic eruption devastated Urzelina, resulting in widespread destruction and famine on the island of São Jorge. However, the tower of the old Church of Urzelina was the only one that remained after the flow of incandescent lava buried a large part of the building. People still call this event ‘the mystery of Urzelina’ today.

Vera Kratochvil | Urze

The parish of Urzelina is 10 km from Velas and 6 km from São Jorge Aerodrome. Overlooking the islands of Pico and Faial, this coastal area has verdant landscapes stretching from the coast to the mountains. Characterized by orange orchards, famous vineyards, and a historic port, Urzelina is also rich in historical, cultural, and ethnographic heritage — find out more on your visit to the Rural Exhibition Centre.

Legend of Urzelina

Many years ago, Prince Romualdo’s imposing castle stood in the mountains of St. George. One morning, at the sound of the royal trumpet, the entourage set off on a hunt, and Lina, the prince’s beloved, wandered off while chasing pigeons.

Noticing her absence, they searched for her in vain. Sadness overtook the palace, and the prince wandered in despair until he found Lina dead under a horse in a ravine. Moved by sorrow and grief, Romualdo wrapped Lina’s body in heather. This is what they called the plant ‘Urze de Lina’.

The tyranny of the court brought punishment when a volcano destroyed the palace and its surroundings. ‘Urzelina’, the seaside village, witnessed this tragedy, eternalizing the story of the prince and his beloved.
