This investigation endeavored to: 1) Examine the identification and distribution of fin whales around São Miguel Island from 2009 to 2019, utilizing photo identification (photo-id) techniques. 2) Investigate residency patterns and temporal associations among fin whales in the São Miguel region. 3) Explore potential migratory connections between the Azores archipelago and other regions, such as the Iberian Peninsula and northern Spain. 4) Assess the impact of environmental variables, including chlorophyll concentration, on the seasonal presence of fin whales in the study area. The study utilizes opportunistic data collected by “whale-watching” companies, shedding light on the movement and ecological dynamics of these enigmatic marine mammals, with implications for their conservation and the understanding of oceanic ecosystems.
This study yielded significant insights and conclusions: 1) It reveals potential migratory connections between the Azores archipelago and neighboring regions, suggesting a more complex pattern of fin whale movements than previously recognized. 2) The research underscores the influence of environmental factors, notably chlorophyll concentration, on the seasonal presence of fin whales in the study area, providing valuable ecological context. 3) The identification of individual fin whales and the analysis of residency patterns enhance our understanding of their behavior and habitat utilization around São Miguel Island. 4) By utilizing opportunistic data collection from eco-tourism activities, this study showcases the value of citizen science initiatives in advancing marine conservation efforts. Overall, these findings contribute to a deeper comprehension of fin whale ecology, migration patterns, and their relationship with oceanographic factors, thereby promoting informed conservation strategies for these remarkable marine creatures and their habitats.
By elucidating the migratory patterns, residency behaviors, and ecological influences on fin whales in the waters around São Miguel Island, this research contributes directly to the conservation of marine biodiversity and the sustainable use of ocean resources, aligning with SDG #14. Moreover, the engagement of Futurismo, where Maria Ernesto conducted her internship and gathered valuable data for this investigation, exemplifies the power of public-private partnerships. Through their collaboration, this study not only advances our understanding of marine ecosystems but also raises awareness about the importance of responsible ecotourism and environmental stewardship, ultimately fostering a more sustainable and harmonious coexistence between humans and marine life in the pristine waters of the Azores.
