Objective

This investigation aimed to identify and study fin whales around São Miguel Island from 2009 to 2019, analyze residency patterns, explore potential migration connections, and assess environmental influences on their presence, using photo identification data to contribute to conservation and ecological understanding.

This investigation endeavored to: 1) Examine the identification and distribution of fin whales around São Miguel Island from 2009 to 2019, utilizing photo identification (photo-id) techniques. 2) Investigate residency patterns and temporal associations among fin whales in the São Miguel region. 3) Explore potential migratory connections between the Azores archipelago and other regions, such as the Iberian Peninsula and northern Spain. 4) Assess the impact of environmental variables, including chlorophyll concentration, on the seasonal presence of fin whales in the study area. The study utilizes opportunistic data collected by “whale-watching” companies, shedding light on the movement and ecological dynamics of these enigmatic marine mammals, with implications for their conservation and the understanding of oceanic ecosystems.
