González, L. et al (2014): Assessing the distribution of Atlantic spotted dolphins off São Miguel

Using sighting data from whale watching tours conducted between 2009 and 2011 off of São Miguel, Azores, González et al. (2014) examined temporal distribution and habitat preferences of Atlantic spotted dolphins (Stenella frontalis).

Objectives

To assess the temporal distribution of Atlantic spotted dolphins (Stenella frontalis) off São Miguel, Azores, focusing on seasonality between 2009 and 2011.
To examine the depth preferences and sea surface temperature (SST) associated with dolphin sightings.
To investigate potential niche competition between Atlantic spotted dolphins and other species, such as the common dolphin (Delphinus delphis), in the region.

Impact

Outside this area, Atlantic spotted dolphin sightings were relatively rare, and were most common between 21 and 23.5 degrees Celsius SST and below 900 m of depth.
The species was most commonly observed in summer months with over half of all sightings occurring between July and September.
The study indicate a potential role in niche competition with other species such as the common dolphin (Delphinus delphis), and it raises the question of ecological interactions between these species.

González et al. (2014) increase knowledge of the temporal distribution and habitat preferences of Atlantic spotted dolphins for Sustainable Development Goal 14 (Life Below Water). In this study, it pointed out the value of sea surface temperature and depth in dolphin sightings and as vital information for marine conservation and sustainable tourism management in the area.
