There is no Whale Watching operation in Corvo island.
Corvo is like the little sister in the big family of the Azores islands. It is the smallest and least populated island of the nine that form the archipelago. We could describe it as tranquil, peaceful and quiet, but do not underestimate the fact that this island is in fact one big volcano. On and under its surface, nature prosper in this almost untouched and pure environment. Around its coasts, you can frequently find turtles, dolphins and many fish of all forms and colours.
The Blue Island is a meeting point for all sea lovers. Sailors always guarantee to leave their mark on the colourful harbour before continuing their long journey crossing the Atlantic. Whale lovers will find this cetacean hotspot deeply interesting as well in terms of fauna.
Hop on a boat to discover more about the fascinating sea wildlife around Faial island and its close neighbours Pico and São Jorge.
There is no Whale Watching operation in Flores island.
During a trip around the Azores islands, Flores is absolutely not to be left out. Venture in this natural paradise disguised in hundreds of nuances of blues and greens. Here, time stops and Mother Nature takes care of everything and everyone. Welcome to the Westernmost point of Europe, the land of tall waterfalls and beautiful mountains replenished with lush vegetation. Get ready to be 100% overwhelmed by eccentric sights – from picturesque villages to ridiculously exuberant and virgin landscapes.
There is no Whale Watching operation in Graciosa island.
The shy Graciosa is not a topic on every travellers’ mouth. But it should be! This small island keeps its secrets well from the sight of adventurers. However, it should figure on your itinerary when island-hopping. Displaying the only red-sanded beach in the archipelago, crystal clear waters, impressive volcanic caves, infinite greenery, cute typical windmills, and friendly local people, Graciosa will surprise anyone who dares to set foot on it.
From whale hunting to whale watching, Pico island is a real testament of the Azorean traditions and heritage. Discover more about this significant transition for our ocean friends in the island where the last sperm whale was dragged onto the land.
Nowadays, you can embark on whale watching adventures with Futurismo to observe peacefully the sea giants and feel the connection we have with them.
There is no Whale Watching operation in Santa Maria island.
Santa Maria – the island in the sun. Only about 80 kilometres away from its popular neighbour São Miguel island, Santa Maria makes a great escape from the crowds. It is quite different than any other islands of the Azores and is particularly known for hosting the only paradisiacal white sand beaches in the archipelago. As the Yellow island, in Santa Maria, you will usually find more sun and a slightly dryer climate, great for beach days. However, there is plenty of other sights to explore: waterfalls, natural pools, forests, a mountain and much more! Under the sea, dive with the giant Manta Rays during their migration. What a once-in-a-lifetime experience!
There is one licensed whale watching tour operator in São Jorge.
Apart from the amazing whale and dolphin watching tours, what you will encounter is a whole new universe. The dragon island, home of hundreds of tiny villages stuck between cliffs and the ocean called Fajãs, is truly enchanting. Its natural charm is timeless and you cannot possibly get enough of it. The rugged terrain is a playground for any nature lover.
São Miguel, the largest of the Azores islands, is a treasure trove of natural wonders. Known as “The Green Island,” it offers lush landscapes and volcanic craters, but it’s also a magnet for marine life.
Its warm waters attract diverse species, making it an ideal starting point for whale watching adventures.
Venture into the Atlantic from Ponta Delgada or Rabo de Peixe and be prepared to witness the magic of the ocean.
Terceira is the second most populated island, very famous among Americans due to the presence of the US army in Lajes air base throughout history. In fact, along with beautiful culture and traditions, history is exactly what this island is rich of.
Definitely pay a visit to our underwater neighbours the dolphins and whales, but do explore the important amount of monuments like the typical Impérios to admire Terceira’s architecture, and the unique landscapes of the island shaped by volcanoes. It is definitely a journey that blends history and natural wonders.
We are not just a local tour operator or the starting point for whale watching trips. We try to give back as much as we can for the animals. We do not feed them to attract them, or track them with sonars; we contribute to their wellbeing in an innovative way – through science.
In addition to education thousands of travellers every year aboard our boats, our marine biologists regularly share knowledge about the cetaceans we encounter with scientists worldwide. This significantly helps research about whales and dolphins and to learn more about their health, behaviour, and migrations. This is possible with Photo Identification, as each tail of dorsal fin is unique to every individual.
Help us help our gentle giants around the Azores by supporting Futurismo and our concept of responsible whale and dolphin watching.
At Futurismo, we are proud to say that we follow strict international rules in order to show maximum respect to the animals. After all, we are only guests in their own home. That is why we partnered up with the World Cetacean Alliance (WCA), the world’s largest organisation for the conservation of whales, dolphins and porpoises, to ensure their protection in the wild.
We want to prove that responsible whale watching is possible, and we believe in helping cetaceans by showing these amazing living treasures to the world and cultivating people about the necessity to protect them.
Throughout history, the Azores proved that it is possible to take action and change the approach from hunting whales to peacefully observing and studying them for conservation purposes.
