What is the Ermida de Nossa Senhora da Paz?

David Rodrigues | Ermida de Nossa Senhora da Paz

The Ermida de Nossa Senhora da Paz, one of the region’s most imposing and popular monuments, dates back to 1522. After an earthquake destroyed the original structure, the locals rebuilt the chapel in 1764. Designed by architect Alberto Albergaria da Silva Pacheco, it features two naves separated by three round arches and a chancel in the typical Baroque style of the region.

In 1991, the Regional Government of the Azores classified the chapel as a “Property of Public Interest”. From its elevated position, the Ermida offers exceptional views of the sea and the entire Vila Franca do Campo Islet, making it a must-see for visitors.

History & Legend

According to local history, in the mid-16th century, the people of Vila Franca do Campo dedicated their lives to herding animals. One day, searching for shelter from the bad weather, a shepherd spotted an image of the Virgin Mary inside a cave. Impressed by his discovery, the shepherd took the image to the parish priest.

However, to the shepherd’s surprise, the next day, the image he had given to the parish priest was back inside the cave. This episode lasted for several days until the parish decided to build the Ermida de Nossa Senhora da Paz on that spot.

What to Do at Ermida de Nossa Senhora da Paz

Climbing 100 Steps and 10 Landings

David Rodrigues | The Famous 100 Steps and 10 Landings of Ermida de Nossa Senhora da Paz

In 1968, they constructed an imposing staircase with 100 steps and 10 landings to facilitate access for the faithful to the chapel located atop a hill, where the Ermida de Nossa Senhora da Paz stands.

They delicately decorated the staircase with Christian images drawn on tiles in shades of blue, a traditional style typical of the region. To further embellish the route to the hermitage, the landings have flowerbeds with hydrangeas, shrubs, and other plants.

The 100 steps and 10 levels together make up two-thirds of the rosary. The landings refer to the Our Fathers of the Joyful Mysteries, and the steps correspond to the Hail Marys.

Contemplate the View From the Nossa Senhora da Paz Viewpoint

David Rodrigues | Nossa Senhora da Paz Viewpoint

The Nossa Senhora da Paz viewpoint, located on Monte de Nossa Senhora da Paz, sits 215 meters above sea level. It offers a stunning panoramic view of Vila Franca do Campo, the Atlantic Ocean, and the islet. The view contrasts the whitewashed buildings typical of the region with the lush green meadows surrounding the area, making it an ideal spot for photography and reflection.

For those visiting Vila Franca do Campo, this viewpoint is a must-see. The Nossa Senhora da Paz viewpoint offers an unparalleled view of the surrounding landscape. It also provides free parking, making it convenient for visitors to enjoy the scenery at their leisure. Whether you’re an avid photographer or simply seeking a peaceful place to unwind, the viewpoint will not disappoint.

Vila Franca do Campo

João Paulo Santos | The beautiful town of Vila Franca do Campo

Vila Franca do Campo is a historic municipality on the southern coast of São Miguel Island. Established in the 15th century, it became the seat of colonial officials and a hub for sugar cane production, the island’s primary source of wealth at the time.

In 1582, the town witnessed a pivotal naval battle between Portuguese and Spanish forces, which marked a turning point in Portugal’s history. Following the defeat, the Portuguese lost their independence for 60 years, and the Spanish executed many Portuguese fighters in Vila Franca.

A remarkable milestone occurred in 1900 when Vila Franca became the first place in Portugal to implement public electric lighting, marking the town as a pioneer in modernization. Vila Franca’s rich history, from its colonial roots to its involvement in key historical events, offers a fascinating backdrop for visitors looking to delve into the past.

Poço Largo Leisure Park

The Poço Largo Leisure Park, situated in Vila Franca do Campo, features an extensive outdoor area where visitors can enjoy peace and leisure in harmony with nature. From here, you can also enjoy a privileged view of the Vila Franca do Campo islet and the immensity of the sea.

Miradouro do Tanque

Miradouro do Tanque, situated in the charming town of Vila Franca do Campo, provides a stunning vantage point to observe the mighty waves and the vast expanse of the Atlantic Ocean. Here, you can unwind on a wooden swing and soak in the peaceful surroundings — perfect for a serene moment or enjoying the sunset by the sea.

Church of São Miguel Arcanjo & Church of Espírito Santo

Located in Vila Franca do Campo, the Church of São Miguel Arcanjo dates back to the mid-15th century. Commissioned by Prince Henry the Navigator, it stood firm until a devastating earthquake destroyed it. Reconstruction began promptly, preserving the Romanesque style, with its three naves and a distinctive basalt bell tower that houses the oldest bell on the island. The church’s interior boasts beautiful tiles, gilded woodwork, basalt baptismal fonts, and a stunning high-relief altarpiece.

Just a short distance away, in the parish of São Miguel, stands the Church of Espírito Santo. The earthquake destroyed this 15th-century building, but the locals rebuilt it in the 17th and 18th centuries, giving it a striking Baroque architectural style. Both churches reflect the local community’s resilience and commitment to preserving history and faith.

Vila Franca do Campo Islet

Alexandre Balas | Vila Franca do Campo Islet

The Vila Franca do Campo Islet is probably the best beach on São Miguel Island. It is an old submarine volcano with crystal-clear waters in its crater, where you can swim and snorkel. For preservation purposes, this natural wonder is open only from June to October.

If you visit the island outside the high season, you can still visit Praia da Vinha da Areia in Vila Franca do Campo. The black-sand beach is ideal for relaxing when the sun is shining.
