A fajã is a natural fertile platform between a high cliff and the ocean, created either by landslides or by lava flows. Located in the municipality of Norte Grande, inside the county of Velas, it is considered one of the biggest fajãs of the “Dragon Island” and was formed by basaltic lava flows from the central volcano Pico Areeiro, 3 kilometers away.

How to Get to Fajã do Ouvidor
Reaching Fajã do Ouvidor is relatively easy by renting a car, especially compared to some of São Jorge’s more remote fajãs. From Velas, the island’s main town, it’s a scenic drive of about 30 minutes for 20 kilometers. You will have to cross the island from south to north via EN1 road until Outeiro da Cruz, and then go on R 1-2. Then, follow the signs to Fajã do Ouvidor, towards the coast. You could also grab a taxi, although there are not so many taxis, mainly in the summer when it is busy.
Another option would be to hike to Fajã do Ouvidor. This is possible with the trail that goes from Pico da Esperança, the highest point of the island at 1053 meters of altitude, towards the fajã. The hike is quite long, 17 kilometers one way, so you’ll need a way to return to your car at Pico da Esperança or hike the whole 34 kilometers. This hike is about 4 hours one way.

Best Time to Visit
The best time to visit Fajã do Ouvidor is absolutely during the late spring and summer months, from May to September. During this period, the weather is warmer, and the seas are calmer than in the fall and winter, making it ideal for swimming at the iconic swimming pools.
However, keep in mind that in July and August, you will certainly not have the pool to yourself, as many tourists are coming to the island at that time of the year. If you are visiting outside the high season and the sea conditions are good, you can enjoy a wonderful time there, either alone or with very few others.

In town, don’t forget to pass by the hermitage of Nossa Senhora das Dores, built in 1903. Every year, on the third Sunday of September, there is the annual religious party in this town, which includes masses and processions.
Moreover, go to the viewpoint to observe the fajã from above with 2 other fajãs nearby. Those are the only lava fajãs on the north coast, the other ones resulting from landslides. From there, if the weather conditions are good, you can even see Terceira and Graciosa islands.
At the natural pool of Poça do Simão Dias and the one right next to it, it is recommended to bring water shoes or flippers and a mask. The lava floor is rough and slippery, which could cause you to hurt your feet.

This remoteness makes the fajã a hidden paradise, ideal for unwinding while surrounded by breathtaking nature.

On the dirt road, no cars can pass. There is a car park at Fajã dos Cubres, and from there, you can only go on foot or by quad!
