What is Lagoa das Empadadas

Alexandre Balas | The wonderful Lagoa das Empadadas

Lagoa das Empadadas is one of the many lakes you can find in the western area of the island. A dense forest surrounds the lake, which features clear blue-green waters. It’s a perfect spot for nature lovers to explore. The area around the lake has many walking trails that offer breathtaking views of the lakes, mountaintops, and dense vegetation.

Geology & Volcanology

Lagoa das Empadadas resembles a figure eight, occupying two coalescing explosion craters belonging to a basaltic scoria cone conditioned by the region’s active tectonics. Like several others in the Serra Devassa area, this cone resulted from moderately explosive basaltic eruptions of the Strombolian type conditioned by a general NW-SE tectonic orientation.

About sea level, both lakes are situated at an elevation of approximately 740 meters. The northern lake, with a length of 250 meters and a width of 80 meters, and the southern lake, measuring 85 meters in length and 80 meters in width, have a depth of roughly 9 meters. These unique features result from the area’s volcanic activity, shaping the surrounding terrain into a natural wonder worth exploring.

History & Geography

Due to its location, water from these lakes supplied the public fountains of Ponta Delgada in the past. It was conveyed through a long stone aqueduct near the Lagoa do Carvão, known as the “Muro das 9 Janelas” (Wall of 9 Windows). Although swimming and other water activities are not permitted, efforts are underway to preserve the area’s natural environment and water quality.

Fauna & Flora

This area is the perfect place to witness the abundance of life that thrives around the lakes. Thanks to its unique environment, favorable climate, and volcanic soil, flora and fauna grow remarkably easily. While exploring the area, it’s common to encounter a diverse array of life both in and around the water and on hikes through the surrounding landscape.

In the case of flora such as Endemic plants, like Leontodon filii, Lysimachia Azorica, Hypericum Foliosum, Azaleas, and Cryptomeria japonica, they are effortless to spot around hikes and in their surroundings. Near the lake, you can spot several water plants, such as:

  • Callitriche Stagnalis (Pond Water — Starwort);
  • Potamogeton Polygonifolius (Pog Pondweed);
  • Litorella Uniflora (Shoreweed);
  • Eleocharis Palustris (Spikerush);
  • Scirpus Fluitans (River Bulrush);
  • Juncus Bufonius (Toad Rush-Juncus);
  • Egeria Densa (Brazilian Water-Weed);
  • Sagitaria Sp (Arrowheads).

This area is also rich in fauna, boasting an impressive variety of species that call it home. From birds to small fish and reptiles, the ecosystem here supports a diverse array of wildlife.

  • Turdus Merula Azorensis (Common Blackbird);
  • Fringilla Coelebs Moreletti (Chaffinch);
  • Larus Chachinnaus Atlantis (Yellow Footed Gull);
  • Motacilla cinerea (Grey Wagtail);
  • Buteo Buteo (Common Buzzard);
  • Rana Perezi (Iberian Green frog);
  • Esox Lucius (Northern Pike);
  • Rutilus Rutilus (Common Roach).

Miradouro da Grota do Inferno

Marco Medeiros | Amazing sunset over Miradouro da Grota do Inferno
Marco Medeiros | Amazing sunset over Miradouro da Grota do Inferno

You will see that immediately when you type ‘Azores’ on the internet. Miradouro da Grota do Inferno offers an incredible panorama over many lakes inside the Sete Cidades volcanic complex. Breathe fresh air and enjoy the views.

Miradouro da Vista do Rei

David Rodrigues | An emblematic postcard of the Azorean archipelago

From Vista do Rei’s Viewpoint, you are standing on the spot of some of the most famous postcards of the Azores. The green and blue lakes are one of Portugal’s seven natural wonders. And once you look at it from Vista do Rei, you can truly understand why.

From this viewpoint, you can also look at Sete Cidades village on the shore of the blue lake and at the stone bridge separating the colors of the lakes, which is only one lake. Indeed, the water runs under the bridge, so it is a two-colored lake.

Lagoa do Santiago

João Paulo Santos | Enjoy the tranquillity of Lagoa de Santiago

Lagoa de Santiago, a small lake inside the Caldera, is an attraction with unique features. The lagoon is approximately 29m deep and situated at an altitude of 260m. High slopes guard the lake, which is characterized by greenish-looking water.

It is surrounded by typical Macaronesian forests and Cryptomeria plantations, making access to this hidden gem challenging. However, a viewpoint on the main road allows tourists to admire this beautiful location up close.

Lagoa das Sete Cidades

Álvaro RP | Kayak activities at Lagoa das Sete Cidades

Lagoa das Sete Cidades – the lake of the ‘Seven Cities’ – is a natural highlight, attracting thousands of visitors yearly. It is, in fact, one of the most emblematic sceneries of the Azores.

It was elected one of Portugal’s seven natural wonders and is protected by Natura 2000. Furthermore, it is a unique place on Earth, reminding us how small we are compared to nature.

Locals and travelers love to see the lake from various viewpoints around the big volcanic complex.

Mosteiros Village

Álvaro RP | Enjoy the view over Mosteiros Islets

A town completely turned to the ocean, where the soothing salty breeze is omnipresent everywhere you go — a smell of holidays and an idyllic vision for sea lovers. The picturesque village of Mosteiros is the place to be for a refill of good vibes and the preferred spot for sunset enthusiasts.

Ponta da Ferraria

David Rodrigues | Sunset at Ponta da Ferraria

This is truly a wonder of nature. Ponta da Ferraria is the only hot spring in the Azores where you don’t have to pay to enjoy the relaxing warm waters.

The best part is that it is located in a volcanic fissure inside the ocean — 100% natural! You should visit when the sea conditions are favorable and the tide is low to experience the warmth of the ground.

It was a unique experience to witness the volcanic origins of the Azores. Swim in a natural hot spring in the Atlantic Ocean.
