History of Mata-Jardim José do Canto

José do Canto planted Mata-Jardim José do Canto in the mid-19th century on barren land shaped by the Lagoa Seca volcano. George Aumont eventually completed the garden, and it now belongs to Margarida Jacome Correa Hintze Ribeiro, the great-great-granddaughter of José do Canto and Maria Guilhermina Taveira de Brum da Silveira.

The garden’s story began in 1843 when José do Canto commissioned a plan for the estate and his palace in London. He completed the project between 1845 and 1846 but continued enriching and expanding the park until 1885.

Over time, people introduced more than 6,000 plant species to this remarkable garden, transforming it into São Miguel’s largest acclimatization field for fascinating plants and possibly Portugal’s.

After José do Canto’s death, his heirs divided the property. Today, Mata-Jardim spans 120 hectares south of Lagoa das Furnas, with 10 hectares dedicated to landscaped gardens.

Who Was José do Canto?

José do Canto, the founder of Mata-Jardim José do Canto, was born in São Miguel and gained recognition for his deep passion for botany. A highly cultured man, he meticulously cared for the gardens of Lagoa das Furnas and Ponta Delgada throughout his life.

His dedication to horticulture connected him to botanical gardens and nurseries worldwide. He actively exchanged, bought, and sold plant species, enriching the flora of São Miguel and cementing his legacy as a visionary botanist.

Fauna & Flora of the Mata-Jardim José do Canto

Mata-Jardim José do Canto showcases a stunning variety of plant species worldwide, captivating all who visit. UNESCO’s “Botanic Gardens Conservation Secretariat” lists the garden as a property of public interest and includes it in the World Guide to Botanic Gardens.

Although the garden no longer has the same botanical richness as it did during José do Canto’s time, it continues to amaze visitors.

Visitors can walk along avenues with hundreds of camellias and admire the lush green woods. They’ll marvel at the towering centenarian sequoias and explore the enchanting valley of ferns. The rich diversity of plant life makes this garden truly magical.

Álvaro RP | The magnificence of the Chapel of Nossa Senhora das Vitórias

The Ermida de Nossa Senhora das Vitórias is a unique neo-Gothic chapel, the only one of its kind in the Azores. Built-in the 19th century, it graces the south shore of Furnas Lake and forms part of Mata-Jardim José do Canto.

Quick Info

José do Canto commissioned the chapel as an act of faith, hoping to aid his wife, Maria Guilhermina, in recovering from a serious illness. Later, both were laid to rest within its walls.

Inspired by the grand neo-Gothic churches of Europe’s capitals, this architectural masterpiece is a testament to devotion and artistry. Be sure to step inside to admire its remarkable design and craftsmanship.

A woodland garden surrounds the chapel, enhancing its charm. Stroll through the area to discover intricately carved tree trunk statues and information plaques about the local flora.

Explore the Vale dos Fetos

The parents of the current owner of Mata-Jardim José do Canto created Vale dos Fetos in the mid-20th century. This stunning garden is home to countless fern species and endemic plants, offering visitors a lush botanical paradise.

The original fern valley, initially located outside the property, suffered destruction. Ernesto Hintze Ribeiro and Maria Josefa Gabriela Borges de Sousa Jácome Corrêa replanted it within the estate. Their work restored its beauty and preserved its legacy.

Today, Vale dos Fetos features an extraordinary collection of plants, including:

  • Ferns like angiopteris evecta, cibotium glaucum, woodwardia radicans, and dicksonia antarctica;
  • Graceful palms, such as New Zealand palms, Canary palms, fan palms, and windmill palms;
  • Many other remarkable species contribute to the valley’s vibrant diversity.

Vale dos Fetos is perfect for botany lovers or anyone seeking a peaceful retreat. Visitors can explore the rich diversity of plant life and enjoy nature’s beauty in this magical garden.

Discover the Caldeiras das Furnas

João Paulo Santos | A stunning aerial view of Campo Fumarólico da Vila das Furnas

Its unique geothermal activity and remarkable volcanic phenomena draw thousands of Portuguese and international visitors to the Caldeiras das Furnas yearly.

Visitors witness nature’s raw power at the Campo Fumarólico da Vila das Furnas and the Campo Fumarólico da Lagoa das Furnas. These sites captivate tourists and locals alike with their striking displays of volcanic energy.

Lagoons now occupy the craters of a volcano that has remained dormant since 1630. The volcano’s cone collapsed during its last eruption, forming deep depressions that hold rainwater.

Magma near the surface interacts with rainwater, heating it to extreme temperatures. This process creates fumaroles, hot springs, and boiling water springs. Fumaroles emit steam and sulfurous gases, filling the air with their distinctive smell and offering visitors an unforgettable geothermal experience.
