What is Pico do Ferro

Álvaro RP | A stunning view over Lagoa das Furnas

Perched at 570 meters, the Pico do Ferro Viewpoint offers a breathtaking perspective of São Miguel’s volcanic beauty. Located just 5 km from the parish of Furnas, this viewpoint lies within the municipality of Povoação in São Miguel. It is a must-visit destination for nature lovers, offering incredible views and a serene environment.

As one of Furnas’ top tourist attractions, Pico do Ferro boasts one of the island’s most iconic views. From here, marvel at the stunning Lagoa das Furnas and the magical Furnas Valley. Below, explore other fascinating points of interest visible from this Miradouro.

Quick Info

Designed for everyone, Pico do Ferro is fully accessible, with parking and easy access to ensure all visitors can enjoy this magnificent landscape.

Geology & Volcanology

The Caldeira das Furnas, a protected area with a 5.6 to 8 kilometers diameter, is about 30,000 years old. It includes the Pico do Ferro Viewpoint. Inside the caldera of the polygenetic volcano, you can see Lagoa das Furnas from the viewpoint. The lagoon spans about 200 acres.

Furnas is so rich in evidence of the volcanism of the island and the rich geodiversity. Indeed, you can find fumaroles by the lake and inside the town. In such a small space, you’ll also discover various thermal waters, hot springs, and minerals. By the way, experts consider Furnas one of the biggest hydropoles in Europe.

History & Geography

Over the last 5,000 years, the Furnas volcano, where Pico do Ferro is located, has erupted at least 10 times. Its most recent eruption occurred in 1630, showing that the volcano is dormant but not extinct — it could erupt again.

Pico do Ferro Viewpoint lies in Furnas, a parish in the county of Povoação, on São Miguel Island. After its discovery, Povoação was the first settlement on the “Green Island” and holds great historical significance. Although Povoação is inland, slightly to the east, the viewpoint offers views of both the interior and the distant ocean.

Fauna & Flora of Pico do Ferro

The Furnas volcanic complex is a protected landscape within the Natura 2000 project. The Lagoa das Furnas Watershed Management Plan actively safeguards the lake and highlights its critical role in preserving the Azorean archipelago’s unique fauna and flora.

The volcano’s crater walls host diverse vegetation. You’ll encounter fascinating species like giant rhubarb and acacias. Endemic treasures, including Macaronesian holly and Azorean laurustinus, also invite discovery. A local conservation project actively restores the lake’s ecosystem by reintroducing more endemic plants.

Pico do Ferro is also a great spot for observing wildlife. Although the Azores have few wild animal species, visitors often spot rabbits here. Bird enthusiasts will enjoy seeing species such as the capped heron, Azores chaffinch, São Miguel goldcrest, and buzzard. Furnas is one of the few places to see the Azores’ noctule bat, but only at night. The lake is home to fish species like roaches, carp, and pikes, adding to its rich biodiversity.

You will also notice the smoke rising from the lake, blending with the clouds. These fumaroles cook and heat the famous Cozido das Furnas with volcanic activity. On clear days, the viewpoint offers views of the village, the Atlantic Ocean, and even Santa Maria Island.

The 6.2-kilometer trail takes about 3 hours to complete. Although the walk is moderate, the difficulty level is easy, making it ideal for families and friends. The final part may be challenging, with a steep climb of 300 meters. However, it rewards you with a spectacular view over Lagoa das Furnas and Caldeiras das Furnas.
