The journey takes approximately 35 minutes by car, 1 hour and 23 minutes by bus, and 2 hours and 50 minutes by bicycle. In any case, you can make this journey on foot, but you should expect to walk for around 8 hours.

Mata-Jardim José do Canto
Mata-Jardim José do Canto is on the south side of Furnas Lake. Initially, José do Canto planted this garden in 1861. He chose an arid area previously affected by the Lagoa Seca volcano. Notably, that volcano has remained silent since 1630. Meanwhile, French ‘pop star’ Barillet-Deschamps designed the landscaping project.
This ten-hectare woodland garden features centuries-old camellias and sequoias. Additionally, it offers the Salto do Rosal trail. This two-kilometer path leads visitors directly to a crystal-clear waterfall. The site has been open to the public since August 2014.
The flora at Mata-Jardim is exceptional. Specifically, you can see a vast collection of camellias lining the property’s extensive boulevards. These flowers also thrive within the new camalieto. Furthermore, they coexist with remarkable endemic plants and trees from temperate or subtropical regions.
Ermida de Nossa Senhora das Vitórias
Indeed, the unique neo-Gothic Ermida de Nossa Senhora das Vitórias remains the only chapel of its kind in the Azores. Moreover, this 19th-century landmark graces Furnas Lake’s south shore. It also forms a vital part of the Mata-Jardim José do Canto.
