Gruta das Torres is a Regional Natural Monument located in the parish of Criação Velha, belonging to Madalena, on Pico Island, in the Azores. This impressive lava tube is the largest of its kind in the archipelago and in Portugal, and you can access it via the Centro de Visitantes da Gruta das Torres.

The cave was discovered in 1990 and was formed about 1,500 years ago by lava flows from the eruption of Cabeço Bravo, part of the Pico Mountain Volcanic Complex. Inside, visitors can find unique geological features such as lava stalactites and stalagmites, lava balls, and much more — a fascinating record of the island’s volcanic history.

The gate to this wonderful experience is the Visitor Center of Gruta das Torres, or in Portuguese, Centro de Visitantes da Gruta das Torres. This is where the journey starts and where you will learn more about the lava tunnel. In this comprehensive guide, you will find everything you need to know about the visitor center.

What is Centro de Visitantes da Gruta das Torres?

@michaelllzinho on Instagram | Centro de Visitantes da Gruta das Torres, Pico island
@michaelllzinho on Instagram | Centro de Visitantes da Gruta das Torres, Pico island

The cave extends for approximately 5 kilometers, and to access it, you need to go through the Centro de Visitantes da Gruta das Torres and take a guided tour. In the year 2000, the Regional Secretariat for the Environment launched a project to improve accessibility and visitor safety at the cave. As part of this initiative, the modern Visitor Center was built.

Please note: As of September 2025, there is currently no descent to the cave for safety reasons. You can still explore the visitor center and discover more about the cave, as it is dedicated to environmental awareness and sustainable tourism. You can enjoy the movie and documentary projections in the auditorium, as well as the facilities such as restrooms and a parking lot.

The Architecture of Centro de Visitantes da Gruta das Torres

In terms of architecture, it was directly inspired by the traditional stone walls (“currais”) of Pico Island, with a black finish representing the cave’s vitrified lava.

Did you know

Gruta das Torres Visitors Center (CVGT) used natural resources sustainably, integrating well into the landscape and yet serving as a contemporary work of art, providing entertainment and environmental education to its visitors while respecting the cave scenery.

The project has received significant international recognition. First, in 2006, it was a finalist of the Portuguese selection commission of the V Ibero-American Biennale of Architecture and Urbanism. Then, in 2007, it was nominated for the Mies van der Rohe Award for Contemporary Architecture. And finally, in 2009, it won the gold medal at the Tektónica National Award of the Architects Order.

How to Get to Centro de Visitantes da Gruta das Torres

The visitor center of Gruta das Torres is located on the western part of Pico Island. It is about 10 minutes by car or taxi from Madalena. For about 5 kilometers, you will drive on secondary roads eastward, as it lies right between Madalena and Pico Mountain.

There are no public transportation options to take you there, but you can sign up for an excursion with transportation included.
