Gruta das Torres is a Regional Natural Monument located in the parish of Criação Velha, belonging to Madalena, on Pico Island, in the Azores. This impressive lava tube is the largest of its kind in the archipelago and in Portugal, and you can access it via the Centro de Visitantes da Gruta das Torres.
The cave was discovered in 1990 and was formed about 1,500 years ago by lava flows from the eruption of Cabeço Bravo, part of the Pico Mountain Volcanic Complex. What is Centro de Visitantes da Gruta das Torres?
The cave extends for approximately 5 kilometers, and to access it, you need to go through the Centro de Visitantes da Gruta das Torres and take a guided tour. In the year 2000, the Regional Secretariat for the Environment launched a project to improve accessibility and visitor safety at the cave. As part of this initiative, the modern Visitor Center was built.
Please note: As of September 2025, there is currently no descent to the cave for safety reasons. You can still explore the visitor center and discover more about the cave, as it is dedicated to environmental awareness and sustainable tourism. You can enjoy the movie and documentary projections in the auditorium, as well as the facilities such as restrooms and a parking lot.
The Architecture of Centro de Visitantes da Gruta das Torres
In terms of architecture, it was directly inspired by the traditional stone walls (“currais”) of Pico Island, with a black finish representing the cave’s vitrified lava.

The visitor center of Gruta das Torres is located on the western part of Pico Island. It is about 10 minutes by car or taxi from Madalena. For about 5 kilometers, you will drive on secondary roads eastward, as it lies right between Madalena and Pico Mountain.
There are no public transportation options to take you there, but you can sign up for an excursion with transportation included.

Opening Times
- November 1st to March 31st: Tuesday to Saturday: 9 am – 12:30 pm and 1:30 pm – 5 pm. Closed on Mondays and Sundays, as well as on January 1st and December 25th.
- April 1st to October 31st: Monday to Sunday: 10 am – 12:30 pm and 1:30 pm – 6 pm.
Reminder: Access to the cave itself is temporarily closed, but the Visitors Center remains open for tours.
Pro Tips
Booking in advance is a must, mostly during the high season. The visit is available in English and Portuguese.
You must wear appropriate clothing, such as hiking shoes for rocky terrain and a light, waterproof jacket. The temperature inside the cave is about 15°C, and the humidity is very high (70-100%). Note that all safety equipment is included (helmet with a hygienic cap and a hand flashlight).
The 1-hour visit to the cave (temporarily closed as of September 2025) is of medium difficulty and is not recommended for people with claustrophobia. People with reduced mobility should contact the visitor center beforehand. There is a minimum age of 5 years, and children up to 12 years old must be accompanied by a responsible adult and walk on their own; baby backpack carriers are not authorized. Also, if you are a group of 15 or more people, you should contact the visitor center beforehand. The minimum number of participants is 3.
