What is Sete Cidades

The Sete Cidades volcanic complex is located in the Ponta Delgada county of São Miguel. This area is not only a stunning region but also home to a charming village. The two-colored lake, steeped in legend, is the most famous attraction in this area.

The blue-eyed princess and the green-eyed farmer created the lake with their tears after the king forbade their love, enhancing the mystical allure of this natural wonder. Sete Cidades is a must-visit destination for anyone looking to explore the natural beauty and cultural heritage of the Azores.

Geology & Volcanology

Álvaro RP | Sete Cidades is an asbolute magical place
Álvaro RP | Sete Cidades is an absolutely magical place

Sete Cidades is a volcano. The volcano formed a nearly circular caldera with a diameter of 5.3 km, earning it the designation of a polygenetic volcano. The Blue and Green lakes dominate the landscape inside the caldera. Approximately 36,000 years ago, volcanic activity created the primary caldera, and subsequent intra-caldera eruptions formed additional calderas, such as Caldeira Seca, Caldeira do Alferes, and Seara. Some of these secondary volcanoes have small lakes within their craters, including Lagoa de Santiago and Lagoa Rasa.

History & Geography

David Rodrigues | This kind of images is not uncommon when visiting Sete Cidades' village and it's part of its magic
David Rodrigues | These kinds of images are not uncommon when visiting Sete Cidades’ village

The area of Sete Cidades was relatively uninhabited until the late 18th century, likely due to its location farther inland on the island of S.Miguel. However, by 1791, six families had settled in the village. In the 1970s, the population had grown to around 821 inhabitants, though it has since decreased due to emigration to countries like the United States and Canada. As of the 2021 census, the village’s population stands at 701, with a population density of 36.5 inhabitants per square kilometer.

One of the main draws of Sete Cidades is its eponymous lake, the largest in the Azores archipelago. The lake boasts a diameter of 4.2km, covers a total area of about 4.3km², and has a depth of 28.5m. The surrounding landscape of green pastures and numerous smaller lakes nestled inside volcanic cones offers visitors a breathtaking natural setting unlike any other.

Culture & Festivities

@azoresislandgirl | Muro das Nove Janelas
@azoresislandgirl | Muro das Nove Janelas

Sete Cidades is famous not only for its natural beauty but also for its historical landmarks. The old aqueduct and the “Muro das Nove Janelas” significantly express the structure that transported water from the springs of Serra Devassa to Ponta Delgada. The tunnel that connects to Mosteiros, built in 1937, was an essential structure that prevented floods and facilitated commercial trade.

The Sete Cidades Bridge is a remarkable element of the landscape. It features seven arches and divides the Blue and Green lakes. The ancient building Seara is famous for its small tea plantation and factory, while the church of S.Nicolau, built in neo-Gothic style, is known for its beauty and holds the main religious festival of the village. All of these landmarks add to the unique charm and character of Sete Cidades, making it a must-see destination for visitors to the Azores.

Fauna & Flora

David Rodrigues | Sunrise fog in Sete Cidades welcoming the recreational fishermen

Sete Cidades is a prime location for birdwatching due to its stunning lakes, where visitors can spot both migrant and resident bird species. Some of the bird species you may see here include Eurasian Wigeon, American Wigeon, Ring-necked Duck, Pied-billed Grebe, Common Tern, Goldcrest, Blackcap, Blackbird, European Robin, Common Starling, Chaffinch, and Grey Heron.

In the lakes, several species of introduced fish, such as Carp, Pike, and Perch, can be found.

Although some areas still contain endemic plant species, much of the vegetation in Sete Cidades has been replaced by invasive plants like the ginger lily (Hedychium Gardnerianum) and the giant rhubarb (Gunnera Tinctoria).

Thick Cryptomeria wood can be found between Canario Lake and the aqueduct. Inside the caldera, visitors can admire the stunning walls of Hydrangeas that line the roads, creating a breathtaking and unique landscape.

Lagoa de Santiago, a small lake inside the Caldera, is an attraction with unique features. The lagoon is approximately 29m deep and situated at an altitude of 260m. Steep slopes guard the lake, showcasing greenish waters surrounded by lush Macaronesian forests and thriving Cryptomeria plantations. As a result, access to this hidden gem is challenging. However, a viewpoint on the main road allows tourists to admire this beautiful location up close.

Lagoa das Empadadas is a pair of serene, small lakes nestled within a dense cryptomeria forest in São Miguel. These tranquil bodies of water exude a magical charm, offering visitors a peaceful retreat surrounded by nature’s verdant beauty.

Historically, these lakes played a vital role in the island’s water management system. An ancient stone aqueduct channeled their waters, supplying Ponta Delgada’s fountains and fresh water to the city. Lagoa das Empadadas invites visitors to explore scenic trails, enjoy its tranquility, and immerse themselves in São Miguel’s natural beauty.

Lagoa do Canário

Monte Palace Hotel

David Rodrigues | Monte Palace hotel
David Rodrigues | Monte Palace hotel

Monte Palace was a sumptuous 5-star hotel on São Miguel Island in the Azores. It is located in the Vista do Rei viewpoint, in Sete Cidades, Ponta Delgada county. The viewpoint is particularly renowned for its panoramic view over the lakes of Sete Cidades and the village inside the volcanic crater.

Built into the hillside to take advantage of the view over the Atlantic Ocean or the colored lakes, the hotel had a great chance to attract many visitors and succeed. However, it was abandoned in 1990 and was only open for 18 months.

Monte Palace was awarded for being Portugal’s finest hotel, the same week it closed its doors for good. What was once one of the most luxurious achievements of the islands is now in a deteriorated state that one cannot imagine unless one sees it themselves.

Muro das Nove Janelas

The Muro das Nove Janelas (“Nine Window Wall” if literally translated) is an aqueduct constructed between the 17th and 18th centuries to address water scarcity in the region. This impressive structure is now recognized as a valuable historical heritage and was built to capture water from the Lagoa do Canário and distribute it to nearby parishes.

Over time, the wall fell into disrepair. Still, it has been restored through various efforts by the Municipal Services of Ponta Delgada, bringing back this once-forgotten monument to its former glory.

Ponta Delgada

Ponta Delgada is officially one of the best places in Portugal to live. The modern city is the biggest and most populous of the Azores. There, the ocean breeze, mountain views, and delicious local food are part of everyday life. Despite being an energetic city, Ponta Delgada has no rush and no annoying traffic jams.

In the beginning, Ponta Delgada was only a small fishing village. But quickly, thanks to its safe bays, it became the most important harbor for trade on the island. Ponta Delgada was declared a city in 1546 and considered the capital of the island. This happened after the first capital – Vila Franca do Campo – was destroyed in 1522 by a terrible earthquake. Nowadays, Ponta Delgada, with its almost 70,000 inhabitants, is a cosmopolitan city attracting visitors from all over the world.
