Geology & Volcanology

Miradouro da Ponta do Sossego is located within the Nordeste volcanic complex, home to the island’s oldest volcanoes. These volcanoes formed through effusive and fissuring volcanic activity. The extinct complex began forming approximately 4 million years ago, following significant eruptions that gave rise to the landmass now known as Nordeste. The landscape visible today reflects the region’s fascinating geological history.

History & Geography

The Ponta do Sossego viewpoint is relatively recent. However, as indicated by a typical ceramic plaque, the park was inaugurated after the last expansion works in July 1995 by Dr. Eugénio Leal, the regional secretary for tourism and the environment at the time.

Miradouro da Ponta do Sossego belongs to Nordeste, one of the six municipalities on the island of São Miguel. As the name suggests, Nordeste is located in the northeastern part of the island. When traveling from Nordeste to Povoação along the coastline, Ponta do Sossego is one of the first viewpoints you will encounter.

Fauna & Flora

At Miradouro da Ponta do Sossego, you will likely encounter several street cats, a common sight across the islands. This viewpoint is known for its stray cats, who often seek food from visitors and locals in the picnic area. Some local organizations provide proper food and water to these animals and ensure they are neutered to control the population.

In addition to the cats, you can observe various birds around the park. The well-maintained garden at the viewpoint is home to a wide range of endemic plants typical of Macaronesia. In the summer, the park is beautifully adorned with vibrant blue hydrangeas in full bloom.

When the sun rises, it paints the sky with vibrant colors, creating an unforgettable scene. Witnessing the sun rise over the ocean is an iconic moment that everyone should experience at least once. Some visitors even sleep in their cars in the parking lot to catch the sunrise, while others arrive as early as 5 a.m. to ensure they don’t miss the show.

Ponta do Sossego, located in the Nordeste region, is one of Europe’s most picturesque towns, showcasing typical Macaronesian vegetation. The garden is home to unique flowers and plants you won’t find elsewhere.

Well-maintained and carefully tended by gardeners, the park’s beauty makes it one of the most picturesque spots on São Miguel Island. Take your time to wander through and discover every hidden corner.

Admire the Infinite Ocean

Miradouro da Ponta do Sossego offers stunning views of the green mountains of São Miguel, with high cliffs descending to the deep blue ocean. From this viewpoint, you can also see Fajã do Araújo, a small village on a natural volcanic platform by the sea, and Praia do Lombo Gordo, a beautiful black-sand beach.

If you’re lucky, you might spot dolphins or whales swimming along the east coast of São Miguel. The Azores are known for being a paradise for cetaceans, and whale and dolphin watching tours are pretty popular. Don’t forget your binoculars to increase your chances of a memorable sighting!
