What is Sete Cidades
The Sete Cidades volcanic complex is located in the Ponta Delgada county of São Miguel. This area is not only a stunning region but also home to a charming village. The two-colored lake, steeped in legend, is the most famous attraction in this area.
The blue-eyed princess and the green-eyed farmer created the lake with their tears after the king forbade their love, enhancing the mystical allure of this natural wonder.
Sete Cidades is a must-visit destination for anyone looking to explore the natural beauty and cultural heritage of the Azores.
Geology & Volcanology
Sete Cidades is a volcano. The volcano formed a nearly circular caldera with a diameter of 5.3 km, earning it the designation of a polygenetic volcano. The Blue and Green lakes dominate the landscape inside the caldera. Approximately 36,000 years ago, volcanic activity created the primary caldera, and subsequent intra-caldera eruptions formed additional calderas, such as Caldeira Seca, Caldeira do Alferes, and Seara. Some of these secondary volcanoes have small lakes within their craters, including Lagoa de Santiago and Lagoa Rasa.
History & Geography
The area of Sete Cidades was relatively uninhabited until the late 18th century, likely due to its location farther inland on the island of S.Miguel. However, by 1791, six families had settled in the village. In the 1970s, the population had grown to around 821 inhabitants, though it has since decreased due to emigration to countries like the United States and Canada. As of the 2021 census, the village’s population stands at 701, with a population density of 36.5 inhabitants per square kilometer.
One of the main draws of Sete Cidades is its eponymous lake, the largest in the Azores archipelago. The lake boasts a diameter of 4.2km, covers a total area of about 4.3km², and has a depth of 28.5m. The surrounding landscape of green pastures and numerous smaller lakes nestled inside volcanic cones offers visitors a breathtaking natural setting unlike any other.
Culture & Festivities
Sete Cidades is famous not only for its natural beauty but also for its historical landmarks. The old aqueduct and the “Muro das Nove Janelas” significantly express the structure that transported water from the springs of Serra Devassa to Ponta Delgada. The tunnel that connects to Mosteiros, built in 1937, was an essential structure that prevented floods and facilitated commercial trade. The Sete Cidades Bridge is a remarkable element of the landscape. It features seven arches and divides the Blue and Green lakes. The ancient building Seara is famous for its small tea plantation and factory, while the church of S.Nicolau, built-in neo-gothic style, is known for its beauty and holds the main religious festival of the village. All of these landmarks add to the unique charm and character of Sete Cidades, making it a must-see destination for visitors to the Azores.
Fauna & Flora in Sete Cidades
Sete Cidades is a prime location for birdwatching due to its stunning lakes, where visitors can spot both migrant and resident bird species. Some of the bird species you may see here include Eurasian Wigeon, American Wigeon, Ring-necked Duck, Pied-billed Grebe, Common Tern, Goldcrest, Blackcap, Blackbird, European Robin, Common Starling, Chaffinch, and Grey Heron.
In the lakes, several species of introduced fish, such as Carp, Pike, and Perch, can be found.
Although some areas still contain endemic plant species, much of the vegetation in Sete Cidades has been replaced by invasive plants like the ginger lily (Hedychium Gardnerianum) and the giant rhubarb (Gunnera Tinctoria).
Thick Cryptomeria wood can be found between Canario Lake and the aqueduct. Inside the caldera, visitors can admire the stunning walls of Hydrangeas that line the roads, creating a breathtaking and unique landscape.
